There was silence. No exhalation of breath, no sound of a footfall. Heimdall didn't turn around, he kept his eyes fixed on the scene before him.
A voice spoke up from a few meters behind him. A soft voice, a boy's voice, and yet the tones of anger and sadness were present. Even then.
"Today, they"
"I know." Heimdall interrupted. "I saw."
"But it wasn't" The young voice began.
"No. No it wasn't. Life is not fair, Prince. Not even for us."
There was silence for a time, stretched out.
"Will you tell on me?"
"I? Said the guardian of the Bifrost. "It is neither a matter of safety, nor security that you are out here after your father's orders. Therefore it is not my concern. However, if I am asked - I will tell the truth. You know this."
"I know."
More silence.
"Heimdall, what's that star there? That's Rigellian, right?" Finally the Asgardian warrior moved, turning to take those long steps back. Able to see the boy, but unable to see what the boy was pointing at, Heimdall got down on one knee. Then he looked up the young prince's arm to the stars above.
"You are correct. And the one just above it"
"That's Contillus!"
Very good, my prince."
"And that one, over there in the constellation of Dragonis? That one's Larun Two!" A rare smile crossed the lips of the adult, hidden - as always - within the darkness of the great, horned helm he wore.
"Yes Loki. That one is Larun Two. But tell me, if you can; what of that star over there?"

Heimdall's Permissions |
Talking: Sure, go for it. Hugging: Do you really want to hug him through all that metal? You might get an armor-pinch, but be my guest. Flirting: He has a dry wit, but it's in there somewhere. Go for it. Kissing: Again, metal. Might be good to get him to take his helm off first. Fighting: Sure, game on. Killing: I'd prefer to discuss this via pm first. Mind Reading: His mind is vast enough to encompass all that he has seen or heard. There is a LOT of stuff in there. Don't get lost! |
Permissions for Heimdall As stated in Heimdall's Character Sheet, the Asgardian Sentry can see and hear all that has happened (or sometimes what will happen) in each of the nine realms. However, he is not infallible (as the events in Thor, the movie shows). So if there are any events that you would like Heimdall to have knowledge of or, conversely, not have knowledge of, please PM or leave a comment here. *Special note for any other Asgardian deities, pantheons, etc. His history is his. He will not be bringing up the past (saga) history of Thor, Loki, etc, without their go-ahead first. i.e. If he is talking with a Marvel-verse Loki, Heimdall will not bring up Fenris or Sleipnir, etc* |

ORIGIN
In the sagas it states that Heimdall is the son of Odin and 'nine maidens, sisters all'. However, other translations have been known to call this 'the nine waves'. It is also written that he was 'increased by the wave cold sea.'
So it could be said that he either had nine mothers, or one mother who's sisters gathered around her and helped raise the babe 'at the edge of the world' (ocean's edge?) This give some ideas to the concept that Heimdall is an ocean/water god as well. Another example of this would be in the Lokasenna, Loki himself 'insults' Heimdall by stating that "For thee in early days, was that hateful life decreed: with a wet back thou must ever be and keep watch as guardian of the gods." A wet back could very likely refer to his ocean/water god status. Also in Guerber's book "Myths of the Norsemen from the Eddas and the Sagas" it retells one of the sagas wherein Loki steals the necklace Brisingsman from a sleeping Freya. Loki attempts to evade capture by turning himself into a blue flame. Heimdall turns himself into a cloud that sends down a 'deluge of rain' upon Loki's fires.( Read more... )

I am a son of Odin, and nine mothers - sisters all - and at the edge of the world I grew, increased by the might of the earth, of the wave-cold sea and the blood of a sacrificial boar.
I can hear the grass grow out of the ground. More than that, I can hear wool grow upon a sheep's back, and I need less sleep than the birds themselves. I can see to the end of the world and beyond, in day as in night. Whatever I gaze upon cannot be hidden from my sight.
In Midgard, I once walked the land, Rig was the name I used. Succor was I given in three different homes as I passed, and both man and wife offered me comfort between them for three nights each. Now my children's children thrive in that world, both great and small.
I can take the form of man or beast, and as a both bear and seal I did I battle a certain unnamed godly thief to bring back the belt Brisingamen to Freyja herself.
I am owner and guardian of the Gjallarhorn, and upon the day I blow it, my brethren will gather and begin the battle to end all battles when at last Ragnarok arrives. And too, the bright sword Hufund is strapped to my side.
In my hall, even Odin One-eye has bragged of my mead, sweet and strong that is is.
Odin's sons have I watched, and Odin's sons have I given counsel to. So too have we battled, for that is the way of life. Mayhap we shall battle again, for I am staunch and true to my king's word and rule - and the king's sons are ever tenacious gods. (Marvel Comic-verse)
I am the first line of defense of Asgard, and I never sleep. I am Heimdall, the bright one, gold of eyes and gold of armor; warden of the Bifrost bridge.
